SUN BAKERY

From Paris, France
to Gwangju, South Korea

As soon as you hop off the yellow metro bus at Maegok station, you will get a whiff of the pungent smell of butter. As the traffic clears up, you will soon be able to locate the smell right across from the station: Sun Bakery.

Is this Paris or Gwangju?

Or Have I Entered Heaven…

The two-story building reminds you of French or European architecture, which immediately makes you forget you are in Gwangju, South Korea. As soon as you enter the building, everything about the bakery transports you to the heart of Paris. Then, you hear “Uhseo-ohsaeyo”, “Welcome” in Korean, from the bakers in the kitchen, which brings you back to the present.

Right as you enter the bakery, you can grab some samples of today’s special pastries. As you indulge in a sample or two, it takes you right back to Paris. Now, pick up a stainless-steel tong and place a sheet on a plate. It’s time to bread shop – buffet style.

Warm, Buttery and Flakey Croissants

Sun Bakery’s head baker Kim Tae-yang specializes in croissants. No baker in Korea makes French croissant as authentic as Kim. In 2018, he took the trophy home at the Gwangju bread championship competition. No wonder French people at the Alliance Française de Gwangju come to Sun bakery to buy croissants every day.

I love the original croissants because it tastes just like the ones I used to eat growing up in Paris. But what I love the most about Sun bakery is their specialty croissants, especially the one with raspberry jam. I always go on Thursdays because they have 2 + 1 promotion where you get your third croissant, of any kind, for free.
— Camille Iacovazzi, a French tutor at the Alliance Française

French Korean Fusion Pastries

Sun bakery also offers assortments of French Korean fusion pastries. Koreans are a fan of sweet pastries, but often the sweetness can be too overwhelming. Sun bakery prides itself on using organic ingredients, and even some vegan pastries. Considering that veganism hasn’t permeated in Korea yet, Sun bakery’s a few steps ahead of others.

If you are planning to travel to South Korea, I’d leave a day or two to tour around Gwangju and stop by at Sun bakery. I promise you won’t regret it.
